There are more than 100,000 undocumented Spanish speaking people on the verge of a massive wave of hunger in Silicon Valley. The vast majority lost their jobs on March 16, 2020, extinguished their savings on the April 1, 2020, rent, and don’t qualify for unemployment or the stimulus check. The high density of housing as a result of the housing crisis is a recipe for explosive COVID-19 outbreak. Latinos are at the highest risk of dying from COVID-19, and yet testing is largely inaccessible for Silicon Valley’s undocumented and uninsured. Hunger plus COVID-19 is a deadly combination.
On April 12, 2020, Palm Sunday, God gave us a plan: Operation Palm Leaf. God is calling us to leverage Silicon Valley technology to bring up a high volume call center (5,000-10,000 calls/day) staffed by Spanish speaking volunteers & pastors who are out of work. Through the call center, our diverse coalition will provide health care (high volume drive-up COVID-19 testing), soul care (pastoral conversations), food and educational materials to callers, all at scale. God has given the Body of Christ a chance to unite, both the English & Spanish speaking communities, to come together and meet the pressing needs in our community.
